What kind of fence job you get in Hayward depends on which side of Mission Boulevard you are on. Below it, toward the bay, the city is flat: postwar tracts, apartment blocks, and a deep belt of warehouses and truck yards west of the freeway. Rear fences in those tracts are long, shared and often patched many times over. Above Mission Boulevard the ground rises toward Garin and the university, and lots tilt enough that every panel has to be cut or stepped. The Hayward Fault runs between the two. It creeps a little every year, and the offset curbs in the old downtown are the proof.
