Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per linear foot in 2026. For 150 feet that is $3,000 to $9,000. These are national figures. What you pay in Fremont depends on local labor, the material and grade you choose, the length, the gates and whether an old fence has to be pulled out first.
These price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Labor rates in southern Alameda County, the cost of lumber and metal, and what we find on your lot all move the real number. Last checked October 2026.
How much does a fence cost per foot?
| Material | Installed cost per foot |
|---|---|
| Chain link | $9 to $30 |
| Wood | $20 to $50 |
| Vinyl | $30 to $60 |
| Aluminum | $25 to $75 |
| Wrought iron | $50 to $85 |
How much does a 6-foot wood privacy fence cost?
The national range for a 6-foot privacy fence is $25 to $60 per foot installed. The table below shows totals at the general $20 to $60 range, and a tall solid fence falls in the upper part of each row because it carries more wood. Most Fremont back fences are redwood boards on treated posts. Redwood is sold in several grades, and moving up a grade is one of the biggest swings in a quote.
| Fence length | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| 50 feet | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| 100 feet | $2,000 to $6,000 |
| 150 feet | $3,000 to $9,000 |
| 200 feet | $4,000 to $12,000 |
What is the cheapest fence to have installed?
Chain link is the cheapest, from about $9 per foot nationally. For privacy at the lowest cost, ask for a simple dog-ear board fence with no lattice or cap, in a standard grade. To keep a large dog in the yard on a budget, 5-foot or 6-foot chain link does the job, and privacy slats can go in another year.
Is black aluminum cheaper than wrought iron or vinyl?
It is cheaper than wrought iron and close to vinyl. The national ranges are $25 to $75 per foot for aluminum, $50 to $85 for wrought iron and $30 to $60 for vinyl. Aluminum also needs no paint, which counts in Fremont because the afternoon breeze brings salt air in from the bay.
How much extra does a gate cost?
Each gate is its own line on the quote. It is not charged by the foot. The price comes from the width, the frame, the hinges and the latch. A single walk gate at the side of the house is the low end. A double gate for a driveway or RV pad is more, and an automatic opener adds again.
How much extra for a slope, brush or an old fence?
We price these after seeing the yard, because they vary too much to guess. On a typical Fremont tract lot the common extra is taking down and hauling the old fence and breaking out old concrete footings. Ivy or shrubs grown through the boards add time. In the hills above Mission Boulevard, hand digging and carrying material up or down the lot are the main extras.
I am sharing the cost with the neighbor behind me. Does that change the price?
It does not change the price of the fence, only who pays which part. Most rear fences in Fremont subdivisions are shared, and some lots share with two houses along the back. We can write one quote with each stretch and each owner's share shown separately. See our page on shared fences for the notice California law asks for.
I got three quotes and they are far apart. Which one is realistic?
Compare what each one includes before comparing totals. Check the footage, height, board grade and thickness, post size and depth, number of gates, tear-out, haul-away and cleanup. The low bid is often short one of these. Then look each company up on the Contractors State License Board site. A bid from someone without a licence is not the same product.
Does a fence add value to my home?
A straight, solid fence makes a house easier to sell, mainly to buyers with pets or young children. It rarely pays back its full cost. For property taxes, ask the Alameda County Assessor's Office, which decides what is treated as new construction.
