Fremont's bay edge is mostly wildlife refuge, salt pond and levee, with no private marinas, so dock work is a small and specific corner of what a fence company does here. The requests we can help with are hardware and fencing at the water's edge: gates and railings on a private pier or pond dock, safety fence along a levee or channel, and replacement parts for gangway rails and dock gates.
Anything near salt water has to be chosen for corrosion first. Plain steel and ordinary plated screws fail fast in air off the salt ponds. We use hot-dip galvanized steel, aluminum or stainless hardware, and we keep different metals from touching where that would speed up rust. The same thinking applies to fence posts in the wet clay near the bay, where the ground itself is salty.
Work at the shoreline often needs approval from more than the city. Land beside the bay, a flood channel or a creek can fall under a regional, state or flood control agency as well, and the owner has to get those approvals. We do not guess at them. Tell us where the site is and what you want replaced, and we will say plainly whether it is a job for us or for a marine contractor.
Dock parts in Fremont: common questions
Do you build docks?
No. We fence, gate and rail them, and we replace that kind of hardware. Floats, piles and structural dock work belong to a marine contractor. Call us and we will tell you which side of that line your job is on.
What metal lasts near the bay?
Aluminum, stainless steel and hot-dip galvanized steel. Powder coating over galvanizing adds protection. Bare or lightly plated steel rusts quickly in salt air and should be avoided.
Do I need a permit for a fence along a channel or levee?
Possibly more than one. The city's fence rules apply, and the agency that owns or regulates the channel may have its own. Ask the City of Fremont Planning Division first. We build once you have the approvals.
