A kennel or dog run is a small fenced space built around one dog's habits. We build them in chain link, usually galvanized or vinyl coated, with a gate that latches firmly and a bottom edge the dog cannot push or dig under. They fit the narrow side yard that most Fremont tract houses have, a corner of the back yard, or a slab beside the garage.
Three things decide the design. Height: a dog that climbs or jumps needs a taller panel or a covered top. The bottom: a digger needs a bottom rail and either a concrete curb, pavers, or mesh laid flat under the soil along the inside. Shade: Fremont is sunny for most of the year, and the Tri-Valley towns get very hot in summer, so a run in full afternoon sun needs a shade cover and should not sit on bare concrete alone.
We also think about the neighbors and the house. A run against a shared board fence puts a dog a few inches from the yard next door, which can lead to barking and to boards being chewed or pushed. Setting the run a little off the fence, or lining that side, avoids it. Tell us the dog's size and whether it digs, climbs or chews, and we will draw a layout with the gate where you will really use it.
Dog kennels in Fremont: common questions
How big should a dog run be?
Big enough for the dog to trot a few strides and turn easily, with a shaded spot to lie down. Long and narrow works better than short and square. We lay it out to the space you have and the size of the dog.
What do you put on the ground?
That is your choice. Concrete is easy to wash but hot in sun. Pavers and gravel drain well. On bare soil we add a barrier along the bottom so a digger cannot get out. Fremont's clay turns to mud in winter, so drainage is worth planning.
Can a kennel be moved later?
A panel kennel set on a slab can be taken apart and moved. A run with posts in concrete is permanent. Renters and people planning to move often choose panels.
